This is the eulogy that was read at our dad's funeral
on 4th June 2009
A Remembrance.
Robert Lawton, better known to most of you as Bob and to us as Dad, was born on 29th November 1927 in Edinburgh. The eldest of nine children he often regaled us with stories of his childhood, and although they were hard times, he had a happy one.
Dad left Edinburgh in his early 20s but he never lost his accent or his love for his home town. We spent many happy holidays there visiting family and sight seeing, a favourite place being Queenβs Park, climbing the crags.
He met Mum on a blind date, they must have hit it off to embark on a marriage that lasted 60 years. It was a marriage filled with love and laughter and together they raised us with a firm but fair hand, tempered with love and filled us with a sense of right and wrong, which stays with us today.
Dad worked very hard and was an honest and decent man and, as many of you know, expected others to be too, sometimes he was sadly disappointed though.
A wonderful dad, he made time for us even when he was working long hours. Sunday afternoons were family fun times and the memories will last forever. Simple things like trips to the park with a picnic and a bat and ball were times of such joy, our special tree in Kelsey Park, being pushed, at speed, up and down the garden in a wheel barrow, a particular 5th November when we had a spectacular display after the lighted taper was dropped into the tin of fireworks and weβre sure all the children in the family remember βbeardyβ.
Dad was an outgoing and friendly man, easy to talk to and eager to help and his family were his life. He gave so much and took so little and was a strong and proud man.
We hope all of you have your own memories to keep him close to you, we know we have many, he will be sadly missed.
Bob leaves behind, his wife Kath, son Brian, daughters Ann, Ruth and Rebecca, grandchildren, Neil, Denis, Tony, Stephen and Claire, Great grandchildren, Bobby, Gemma, Charlotte, Jack, Chelsea, Holly, Max and Oliver and Great, great granddaughter Ella.
We are all lucky to have been a part of this wonderful manβs life.
